Facilitating Empathy for Self and Others

Overview: To be able to appreciate, understand, and respond with warmth and empathy for the pain of another is one of the most pivotal of all capacities allowing for close and satisfying connections with other human beings. Empathy is easier to define than to implement. Even young children show the emerging capacity for empathy when a toddler comforts another child who falls down and scrapes a knee on the playground. It is hard, however, for humans, particularly when in conflict with others, to appreciate the other’s point of view and feelings. Empathy requires careful listening. It is an exceedingly difficult human feat to suspend one’s own point of view and emotional responses in order to intensely concentrate on understanding the point of view and emotions of another. The strategies in this chapter focus on developing and strengthening the capacity for empathy.
